The Chapel of the Blood, since the year 1607, it is the headquarters of the Confraternity of the Purest Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, known in Sagunto as “The Brotherhood of the Blood”.
The oldest data, indicates us that our Brotherhood already existed in the year 1492, when the Catholic Kings expelled the Jews from Spain, and taking advantage of the fact that they had abandoned its synagogue, our ancestors moved its headquarters there, leaving the previous one, since it was quite small.
The old synagogue and our second headquarters was located, about 100 meters away and there was our headquarters until the year 1607, which was completed to build this chapel that are about to visit, whose works began the year 1601.
All “andas”, images or thrones (as they are known in the different points of Spain), have been carved from the year 1942, because all the previous heritage (images, file, paintings, art pieces, etc) were destroyed during civil war of 1936-1939.
Inside, the marble floor, dates back to the year 1969 and the High Altar of 1965, and the image of the Ecce Homo, 1981; the painting of the vault depicts a scene from The Prayer of the Garden, and dates back to the year 1973.
In the center a dove representing the Holy Spirit and saved from the fire of July 1936; and 4 the paintings on the pendentives of the central vault (which also were spared during the tragic fire), have a great value, because they are attributes the authorship of JosÈ Vergara, or of his disciple CamarÛn Bonanat, back in the 18th century and represent scenes from the Passion of Jesus.
Sacreilegious fire were saved, finally, the 4 medallions of the central vault, by unknown author and representing 4 angels.
The Chapel of the Vera-Cruz, is headed by a former image of Christ crucified, of unknown author, and whose origins date back to the 16th or 17th century.
Both the old and the current “andas”, have always been gifted to the Brotherhood by different Mayoralias and with the invaluable Collaboration of the people of Sagunto.
